Citronella Scented Candles

A garden table in August, a terrace where the evening runs on, an open window at the back of the house — that is usually where these end up. Citronella is recorded on every one of them, and several carry a second scent alongside it: Orange, Vanilla, Christmas punch, Wild strawberry or Euphoria. The full name of the candle tells you which. Citronella on its own and Citronella with orange next to it make for two different evenings, so it is worth a second look before you choose.

Whatever the outline, the wax underneath is a paraffin wax blend. And the outlines go their own way: small pinecones, plain pillars in more than one width, cones both slim and tall, spheres, a pentagon pyramid, a sunray prism, relief LOVE candles and a moon dove. Královské Poříčí is where we make all of it, by hand.

Hours are where people guess wrong. Two candles of the same height can hand you very different figures, so take the burn time from the one you have your eye on rather than from how tall it looks. And if it is going outdoors on a table people are eating at, think about how broad the top is before you think about the height.

Choosing between the sizes, and what the hours look like

Take the hours first and let the shape follow. If the candle only needs to see out a meal, CANDLE MOON DOVE stands 5 cm, weighs 0.17 Kg and is rated 2-13 hours. Small Pinecone Candle – Yellow, Citronella runs to 9 cm at 0.06 Kg, measures 2.5 bottom - 5 middle cm and is rated 18-24 hours.

Height on its own settles very little. The pillars make that plain:

  • Pillar Candle 12 cm Citronella: 3.5 cm across, 0.13 Kg, 18-24 hours.
  • Medium Pillar Candle Citronella: the same 12 cm, 0.2 Kg, 27-36 hours.
  • Wide Medium Pillar Candle Svitsol – Citronella: 13 cm, 6 cm across, 0.3 Kg, 36-48 hours.

At 14 cm two shapes share their measurements and then part company. Small Cone Candle 5 is 6.5 cm across, 0.13 Kg, 19-31 hours. Prism Candle Sunray 6 keeps that same 14 cm and 6.5 cm, but weighs 0.46 Kg and is rated 45-75 hours.

For an evening that starts before dark and finishes well after it, Tall Cone Candle Yellow-Blue reaches 43 cm on 7.5 cm across, 0.7 Kg, 127-170 hours; none of the others here stands as tall. Large Tall Cone Candle Yellow-Salmon is lower at 38 cm, broader at 10 cm, heavier at 1.15 Kg, and its 90-200 hours is the longest run of anything here.

Broad tops want a decision on the very first lighting. Large Sphere Candle Blue-Yellow measures 12 cm across at 0.74 Kg and 72-96 hours; Sphere Candle Relief Waves Red-Yellow is 7.5 cm across, 0,195 Kg, 15-30 hours. Let either of them burn on that first evening until the melted wax reaches the outer edge — stop sooner and the flame works its way down a narrow channel and stays there. The rest is routine: cut the wick back before each match, put something flat and non-flammable underneath, keep it out of the wind, and let nobody leave it burning alone, children and animals well clear.
